AN ANALYSIS OF SWEARING EXPRESSIONS USED IN “THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS” MOVIE

This study analyzed the swearing expressions were used by the characters in “The Fate of The Furious” movie. The purpose of this study is to explain the types of swearing expressions based on their function and the dominant types of swearing expressions used by the characters in “The Fate of The Furious” movie. This research is a descriptive qualitative which the researcher becomes the main instrument. The results show that there are two main category, stand-alone and slot fillers. And a smaller category, namely replacive swearing. The stand-alone category consists of 3 types of swearing expressions, including expletive interjection (12 data), emphatic denials (1 data), and name-calling (2 data). The next category is slot fillers which consist 4 types of swearing expressions, including adverbial/adjectival intensifier (4 data), adjective of dislike (1 data), emphasis (18 data), and anaphoric use of epithets (9 data). The last is smaller category, namely replacive swearing (15 data). Based on the research result, slot fillers is the most dominant swearing expressions used by the characters as big as 52% Meanwhile, stand alone and replacive swearing as big as 24% and 24%. The reason of using slot fillers as the most dominant swearing expressions is because the words are placed in the utterances to show surprise, frustration, shock, anger and refer to show adverb/adjective of something that the speakers have been mentioned
